FAQ about Yoga Training & being a teacher
Is the Program a Registered program with Yoga Alliance?
Yes, you will be encourage to register with Yoga Alliance at the completion of your program.
What is the style of the training/yoga and will it make you a versatile teacher?
We are an alignment based school of Hatha Yoga. Largely based on Anusara Yoga and structural integration principles. Our training program will offer you tools that you can apply to any style of yoga. We do not teach you to parrot a sequence but rather how to build your classes intelligently.
How experienced are the primary yoga teachers. How long have they taught yoga and how long have they been teaching teachers to be teachers.
Melonie Nielsen teaches 95% of the program. She has taught yoga for over 22 years (10,000+ hours), has owned the Vancouver Yoga Center for 20 years, has taught yoga teachers to be teachers for 16 years (3000+ hours). She also has a bodywork background including Structural Integration specializing in therapeutics, alignment, bio-mechanics and anatomy.
How many trainees do they accept?
We limit our program to 20 students
What are all the fees for the program?
Course costs $3800 with a early bird discount of -$200 if you prepay in full by a specific date. You will also need to buy the 6 required books.
What do program graduates say?
You are welcome to see some of your testimonials on our Yoga Teacher Training page. All of our teachers come out of our Yoga Teacher training program, they would be happy to share their experience with you. Also arrangements can be made to speak with others that have attended as many of them are regular students of the Vancouver Yoga Center to this day.
How long will it take to get certified?
The core weekends are 6 weekends over 6 months. Graduates usually take up to one year to finish all the requirements. Arrangements can be made to start working on some of the hours to the program before the program begins so you are ahead of the game and ready to graduate at the end of the 6 month core weekends.
What is the curriculum format?
Our program exceeds Yoga Alliance 200 hour program and prepares you to work more therapeutically and address common complaints and issues that arrive for students on their yoga journey.
Does the program teach you to teach beginners and modify for students with injuries?
You bet it does. One of the most detailed trainings for this in our area.
How much yoga experience is required to apply?
We prefer that you have at least a year studying live with a teacher(not videos). We prefer that you know the basic names of the poses so we can jump in teaching you the important stuff of how to teach.
Where do I go to teach after the program?
Most of our graduates that want/wanted to teach yoga have landed teaching jobs. To help the success of our students a part of the program is assisting along with Melonie in one of her yoga classes. We call this Practicum. Followed by up to a 1 year long volunteer community yoga class where you can learn to create your voice and get exposure to students as you are still learning your craft of teaching. You will have the support and resources of the yoga studio to help blossom you as a teacher.
How can I be a paid yoga teacher at the Vancouver Yoga Center?
You will need to complete the Yoga Teacher training program that we offer. After that you volunteer teach for a year. Then when you build up a following of regular students we put you permanently on the schedule and sub list.
